Merle Travis 78s

This week, Roy continues his journey through crates of 78s on Triple-R Radio. The main event is a feature of the highly influential 1947 four-78 album, Merle Travis-Folk Songs of the Hills. This eight-song set contains the original versions of Travis penned classics like Sixteen Tons and Dark As A Dungeon. As well, Merle, alone with his guitar, picks his way through such deep country traditionals as John Henry, I Am A Pilgrim, Muskrat and more.

This 78 album is a fascinating listen and will cover the second half of this week’s RRR. In the first half, you’ll hear shellac from Tennessee Ernie Ford (guess which tune), Jack Guthrie & His Oklahomans, the Boswell Sisters, Louis Armstrong, and more.

That’s Sunday, Sept 19th, 1 PM, Mountain for more 78s from the crates on Rooooy’s Record Room, the show that continues to revolve…and reveal. Fifteen years and counting.
