This week, Roy dips into the Triple-R Radio archives for a mini-history lesson with a stack of Canadian country and folk 78s. You’ll hear sides from small Canadian labels such as Aragon, Arrow, Quality and Biltmore as well as a few RCA Victor sides. Pioneering Canadian country artists include Myrna Lorrie, the Hillbilly Jewels, Lennie Siebert & The Calgary Chuckwagon Gang, Keray Regan, Arthur Scammel, Billy Guitar, Buddy Reynolds, and so many more.

Black Musical Pioneers at 78 RPM

This week, Roy journeys back to the dawn of recorded sound, via the RRR shellac archives, for a salute to some early African American musical pioneers. Things kick off with a 1909 78 of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” from the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The show winds up in 1935 with Cleo Brown’s Decca disc of “When Hollywood Goes Black And Tan”.

In the middle, you’ll hear gems from Bert Williams (1921), Kokomo Arnold (1934), Jelly-Roll Morton’s Red-Hot Peppers (1926), Viola McCoy with Fletcher Henderson’s Jazz Five (1924), Cannon’s Jug Stompers (1928), Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson (1932), and more.

Smoky Mountain Ballads

This week, more 78s from the crates on Triple R Radio. The main feature will be a highly influential 1941 5-78 set, “Smoky Mountain Ballads”, compiled by noted folklorist John Lomax. The set features classic performances from Uncle Dave Macon, the Carter Family, J E Mainer’s Mountaineers, the Dixon Brothers, Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers, and more. Many songs from this set went on to become folk, country and bluegrass staples.

And that ain’t all. You’ll also hear fabulous sides from the Birmingham Jubilee Singers, Sonny Boy Williamson (the first), the Spiders, Memphis Minnie, and more.
