Roy's Record Room on CKUA

Tune in every Sunday at 1 PM Mountain Time / Noon Pacific Time, to Roooooy’s Record Room, the show that continues to revolve. You can stream it live at www.ckua.com. Fifteen years and counting!

Roy’s Record Room is a weekly radio show on the CKUA Radio Network, Hosted by singer/songwriter/performer/broadcaster, Roy Forbes. RRR is a program that unravels and reveals the roots of today’s tunes, for the pure joy of it. Roy spins some familiar but mostly obscure 78s, 45s and LPs from his ever-expanding record collection – sides that don’t show up on many other stations. He loves all kinds of music and explores that eclectic passion weekly on Triple-R Radio.

Roy first came to CKUA at the age of twenty in 1973, when he was invited to guest on Holger Petersen’s legendary ACME Sausage Company program. CKUA has supported Roy and his music since those early days, with his new album, “Edge Of Blue”, having recently spent some time in the upper reaches of CKUA’s Top 20 album chart. Roy’s Record Room (RRR) launched in 2006.

"I love the sense of history that CKUA gives me as a listener as well as the sense of the now and the future," says Roy. "CKUA is the sound of surprise. You never know what you'll hear next”.

Roy’s record collection is more like a record library - running into the thousands of discs, with some even sent in by loyal RRR listeners. His appetite for music is virtually unlimited and he finds creative revelations everywhere.

Christmas Eve Day

This Sunday, Roy celebrates Christmas Eve Day on Triple-R Radio with more Christmas records from his extensive collection of Yule-tune platters – some familiar and many you won’t hear at the mall.

As to who’s on the playlist, no peeking but rest assured that you’ll hear some fine soul, jazz, country, doo-wop, and other pleasing Festive sounds on this special Christmas edition of RRR.

The Yuletide spin begins this Sunday, December 24th, 2 PM, Mountain, on donor supported CKUA Radio. Dial in as Roy celebrates Christmas Eve Day on Roooy’s Record Room, the show that repeats the sounding joy.

Christmas 78s From The Crates

This coming Sunday, RRR will be broadcasting from the North Pole as Roy (aka the Shellac Shack Santa) digs through his sack of goodies for a few gift-wrapped Christmas 78s from the crates. No shaking the parcels though. No peeking at the playlist. Rest assured, you’ll be hearing some fine Hillbilly, Jazz, Mambo, Novelty, Jump Blues, Doo-Wop, Country, and Pop 78s of the Festive kind.

OK, well, we can sneak a peek at ONE little present. It’s a hep 1954 Country updating of the old “Twas The Night Before Christmas” poem from the Davis Sisters. This red-hot platter qualifies as some serious Hillbilly Bop with Chet Atkins joining Skeeter and BJ on echo-drenched guitar for “The Christmas Boogie”. Guaranteed to get your Christmas stocking rockin’.

The Yuletide spin begins this coming Sunday, December 17th, 2 PM, Mountain, on donor supported CKUA Radio. Dial in and groove to the sounds of some Christmas 78s from the crates on Rooooy’s Record Room, the show that repeats the sounding joy.

Come Sunday, December 24th, we’ll celebrate Christmas Eve Day on RRR. Be sure to tune in for more vinyl and shellac from Roy’s extensive collection of Festive platters.

A Snow Day!

It’s a snow day this coming Sunday on Roy’s Record Room. You’ll hear an eclectic batch of wintery sides about sleigh rides, snowmobiles, ski trails, sub-zero temperatures, and, yes, SONGS ABOUT snow. Roy plays vinyl and shellac from Stompin’ Tom Connors, Jesse Winchester, Etta Jones, the Cocteau Twins, Big Maceo with Tampa Red, Julie London, and more.

A cool highlight is an ancient red vinyl RCA Victor 45 circa 1949. Arthur Fiedler conducts the Boston Pops Orchestra for the very first recording of a Holiday classic, “Sleigh Ride”. When Roy picked up this single back in 2010, the original mono recording had been out of print for decades. Lean in. Pick up on the excellent fidelity of this 1949 version of “Sleigh Ride’”.

The spin begins this Sunday, December 10th, 2 PM, Mountain. Pour yourself a cup of warm and dial in for a Snow Day on Roooy’s Record Room, the show that repeats the sounding joy.

Through the years, Roy has amassed a huge collection of Christmas vinyl and shellac. For the December 17th RRR, he’ll pull out a batch of Christmas 78s from the crates. Then, on December 24th, it’ll be Christmas Eve Day on Triple-R Radio. Mark your calendars so you can tune in to these fun Holiday shows.
