Roy’s Record Room is a weekly radio show on the CKUA Radio Network, Hosted by singer/songwriter/performer/broadcaster, Roy Forbes. RRR is a program that unravels and reveals the roots of today’s tunes, for the pure joy of it. Roy spins some familiar but mostly obscure 78s, 45s and LPs from his ever-expanding record collection – sides that don’t show up on many other stations. He loves all kinds of music and explores that eclectic passion weekly on Triple-R Radio.
Roy first came to CKUA at the age of twenty in 1973, when he was invited to guest on Holger Petersen’s legendary ACME Sausage Company program. CKUA has supported Roy and his music since those early days, with his new album, “Edge Of Blue”, having recently spent some time in the upper reaches of CKUA’s Top 20 album chart. Roy’s Record Room (RRR) launched in 2006.
"I love the sense of history that CKUA gives me as a listener as well as the sense of the now and the future," says Roy. "CKUA is the sound of surprise. You never know what you'll hear next”.
Roy’s record collection is more like a record library - running into the thousands of discs, with some even sent in by loyal RRR listeners. His appetite for music is virtually unlimited and he finds creative revelations everywhere.
Jazzy, Bluesy R&R Roots
This week, Roy dives deep into the jazzy, bluesy, big-band roots of rock ‘n’ roll, Triple-R Radio style. You’ll hear trailblazing sides from Sister Rosetta Tharpe (from a V-Disc), Jay McShann with Charlie Parker, the Mills Brothers, Duke Ellington, Tiny Bradshaw, Joe Turner & Pete Johnson, Benny Goodman with Charlie Christian, Ella Mae Morse with Freddie Slack, and so much more.

Jazzy 78s From The Crates on Roy’s Record Room
Roy’s back in the 78 crates this week with nothing but jazz spinning on Triple-R Radio. You’ll hear the Bud Henderson Trio on the first bop 78 recorded and released in Canada, a two-part cultural collision between jazz and classical music as reported by Ella Fitzgerald, cowboy jazz from Bob Wills, Fats Navarro and Miles Davis/Charlie Parker sharing a 1947 Savoy be-bop 78, as well as a 1955 side from Blossom Dearie’s first group.
And that ain’t all. Tune in for more hot jazz sides from the Kansas City Six, Willie Smith with Les Paul, the 5 Red Caps, Jackie Cain & Roy Krall with Charlie Ventura, Dinah Washington and more.
The joint will be jumping this Sunday, July 4th, at 1 PM, Mountain as the jazzy shellac spins on Rooooy’s Record Room – fifteen years of revolving and revealing.
A Fresh Fingerfulla 45s
Roy’s taking a break (no pun intended) from the 78s this week. Instead, prepare yourself for a fresh Fingerfulla 45s that’ll meander through the musical meadows. You’ll hear obscure blues from Betty James and George (Wild Child) Butler; hard country from George Jones (Sinatra’s second favourite singer) as well as the Louvin Brothers; British invasion sounds from the Zombies, Dusty Springfield, and the Beatles; Americanized British invasion sides from the Knickerbockers and Paul Revere & The Raiders; some soul from Jackie Wilson and Little Willie John; even an obscure Bob Dylan single that turns fifty this year.

It’s another musical potluck this week on Triple-R Radio as Roy digs through more 78s from the crates. You’ll hear a 1955 doo-wop disc from Donald Woods & The Bel-Airs that inspired and was covered by Frank Zappa. Nellie Lutcher gives a shout-out to her home town. Jazz piano-wonder Art Tatum swings a Dvorak classic. A fella calling himself Luke The Drifter sings about Ramblin’, sounding suspiciously like a revered 20th century country music icon.
