This week, a treat for Triple R Radio and CKUA fans – a re-broadcast of Alberta Garage, a look at the 1960s roots of Alberta rock ‘n’ roll. This special program on Alberta music generated some fantastic response when it originally aired in late January 2013, so we thought we’d bring it back for another spin this coming Sunday. As you’ll hear on the show, the late Barry Allan contributed greatly to “Alberta Garage”, both with his music and with providing first-hand knowledge of the 60s Alberta rock scene. Covering the years 1960 to 1969, you’ll hear an eclectic batch of musical styles on Alberta Garage. rockin’ pop tunes from Barry Allen. Hot guitar instrumental workouts from Wes Dakus & The Rebels as well as the Esquires. Rockabilly from Barry Boyd & The Frantics plus Jimmy Ordge. Soulful sides from Mary Saxton, and The Lords. Frantic and laid-back garage-band sounds from The Royal Family, The Nomads, Southbound Freeway, and the Brinkman Brothers. Psychedelic sides from the 49th Parallel, Coloured Rain, and the Purple Haze. And there’s more.
If you’re a currently-working Alberta/Canadian musician or just a fan of the music and history, you’ll want to check out these determined rock and roll pioneers who broke trail in the Western Canadian music industry wilderness, back in the pre CanCon days of no grants, no circuit of venues, no easy airplay, no Internet or social media and barely anywhere to record.
That’s Sunday, May 3rd, 2 PM, Mountain, for an ‘encore presentation’ of an RRR labour of love – fifty-eight minutes of Alberta rock and roll 45s from the sixties – Alberta Garage on Rooooy’s Record Room, revolving and revealing since 2006.
