A new Roy Forbes recording is a rare occurrence. Roy doesn’t pop ‘em out every year or so. He takes his time, working slowly to get it right. Edge of Blue may just be the Vancouver singer-songwriter’s best yet – a summation by an artist who has been doing this for a long time. On this album both Roy’s roots and routes are showing; the influences he’s absorbed and where he’s been. Edge of Blue is ten songs full of wisdom, confessions, vulnerability, sensuality, self-reflection and celebration. More of a soul album than country or folk; it has nothing to do with what is ‘hip’ and ‘happening’ in the mainstream music business. This is art song – memorable words, compelling compositions, spare production and a voice every bit as original as when the “kid full of dreams” first came to town almost fifty years ago – pure Roy Forbes.

"On his 11th album, the Canadian folk fixture from Dawson Creek offers up another collection of soulful numbers that range from an almost La Bamba-esque early rock ‘n’ roll sounds ("Don’t Let Go"), to beautiful country folk balladry ("The Beating of Your Very Own Heart") and sweet blues ("Feeling Mighty Lonesome"). As always, his quavering tenor is powerful and full of emotion, the playing is deep in the pocket and listening to the album leaves you wondering why he isn’t a household name." – Stuart Derdeyn, Vancouver Sun/Province February 12, 2020
Edge of Blue Lyrics
Shine a light in the dark
Work your way through your sorrow
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
Shine a light in the dark
See your way to tomorrow
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
When you’re drowning in falling rain
When your love is all in vain
When you’re dragging a ball and chain
Everything weighing you down
Shine a light in the dark
Work your way to tomorrow
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
Woh, don’t let go...
When you’re drowning in falling rain
When your love is all in vain
When you’re dragging a ball and chain
Everything weighing you down
Shine a light in the dark
Work your way to tomorrow
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
You’ve got to find the joy in your heart
And don’t let go
Woh, don’t let go...

Look up in the sky tonight
Big and round, giving off a mellow light
Moving in above the site
It’s a lover’s moon
Drummers’ circle playing loud
There’s a horn band whipping up a side stage crowd
You and me, we’re walking proud
‘Neath a lover’s moon
‘Neath a lover’s moon
And then I feel my arms
Around your waist
Nuzzle my face in your hair
Then the taste
Of your two lips
And then my heart does a flip
Look up in the sky tonight
Big and round, giving off a tender light
Passion burning ever bright
Like a lover’s moon
Like a lover’s moon
And then I feel my arms
Around your waist
Nuzzle my face in your hair
Then the taste
Of your two lips
And then my heart does a flip
Look up in the sky tonight
Big and round, giving off a tender light
Passion burning ever bright
Like a lover’s moon
Like a lover’s moon
Keeps on burning like a lover’s moon...

I’m here
You’re gone
Coal black night crawls to the dawn
And I am more than a little
More than a little bit blue
They said it was bound to be
But that brings no comfort to me
And I am more than a little
More than a little bit blue
I wonder why, why, why
We had to say goodbye
Makes me so lonesome I
I could cry
Ooh, you flew away
You’re gone
Guess I’ll learn how to carry on
But right now, I’m more than a little
More than a little bit blue
I wonder why, why, why
We had to say goodbye
Makes me so lonesome I
I could cry
Ooh, you flew away
You’re gone
Guess I’ll learn how to carry on
But right now, I’m more than a little
More than a little bit blue
I just sit here, and I wonder why, why, why...

When you’re fumbling in the dark
And you just can’t get a spark
Check out the beating of your very own heart
When you’re all up in a bind
And deep blue misery fills your mind
Check out the beating of your very own heart
Ooh, you might be lost on the river
Drifting from the shore
Thinking that you just can’t
Take it anymore
Try put one foot in front of the other
Keep walking and discovering
The beating of your very own heart
When your world is in a spin
Fate’s about to do you in
Check out the beating of your very own heart
When you’re feeling kicked around
And your life is sorrow bound
Check out the beating of your very own heart
Ooh, you might be lost on the river
Drifting from the shore
Thinking that you just can’t
Take it anymore
Try put one foot in front of the other
Keep walking and discovering
The beating of your very own heart
Ooh, you might be lost on the river
Drifting from the shore
Thinking that you just can’t
Take it anymore
Try put one foot in front of the other
Keep walking and discovering
The beating of your very own heart
Check out the beating of your very own heart
Listen to the music in the beating of your very own heart

On the edge of blue
Out there where the tears are falling
On the edge of blue
Out there where the fears are calling
Then I hear a voice
Coming from another room
Moving through descending gloom
Then I hear a voice
Changing wrong to right
Filling my heart with light
On the edge of blue
Out there where the banks are crumbling
On the edge of blue
Out there where my feet are stumbling
Then I hear a voice
Coming from another room
Moving through descending gloom
Then I hear a voice
Changing wrong to right
Filling my heart with light
And pulling me through
From the edge of blue
Then I hear a voice
Coming from another room
Moving through descending gloom
Then I hear a voice
Changing wrong to right
Filling my heart with light
And pulling me through
From the edge of blue

Strumming on my old Stella
Trying to get in a groove
Having a bit of a haywire day
Like I can’t get up and move
Starting to tally my blessings
All that are good and true
Like how the luckiest day in my life
Was the day that I met you
Feeling mighty lonesome
Very, very lonesome
Here all on my ownsome
Feeling mighty
Lonesome
Been in a mental prison
Been in a rotten jail
Been all of my own making
But I’m just about to get my bail
You will be home in an hour
That’s what you said in a text
I’m gonna hug you when you walk in
And who knows what’ll happen next
Feeling mighty lonesome
Very, very lonesome
Here all on my ownsome
Feeling mighty
Lonesome
Been in a mental prison
Been in a rotten jail
Been all of my own making
But I’m just about to get my bail
You will be home in an hour
That’s what you tapped to me in a text
I’m gonna hug you, squeeze you when you walk in
And who knows what’ll happen next
Feeling mighty lonesome
Very, very lonesome
Here all on my ownsome
Feeling mighty
Lonesome
Yeah, I’m feeling mighty lonesome...

Lydia Anne
No one can thrill me quite like you can
Lydia Anne
I’m so thankful I am your man
Understand, I’m your biggest fan
Lydia Anne
Lydia Anne
We stroll along walking hand in hand
Lydia Anne
Living our lives and making our stand
No piece of paper or a wedding band
Lydia Anne
Well, we fell in love
Back in high school
Now I do declare
I’m still a love-struck fool for you
Lydia Anne
No one can thrill me quite like you can
Understand, I’m your biggest fan
Lydia Anne
Well, we fell in love
Back in high school
Now I do declare
I’m still a love-struck fool for you

No one can thrill me quite like you can
Understand, I’m your biggest fan

I’m so glad that I’m your man

Said a word, kind of half in fun
Now I seem to be on the run
Out in the backwoods, hiding in a hut
I should have kept my big mouth shut
Said a word, kind of off the cuff
Never dreamed it could get so rough
Now I’m like a car wheel, spinning in a rut
I should have kept my big mouth shut
You might want to pick your battles
Think, before
You play your knucklehead games
You might want to pick your battles
Quick, before
Everything goes up in flames
You might want to pick your battles
Think, before
You play your knucklehead games
You might want to pick your battles
Quick, before
Everything goes up in flames
Said a word that I shouldn’t have said
Now it’s ricocheting in my head
Big remorse come and hit me in the gut
I should have kept my big mouth shut
Now I’m like a car wheel, spinning in a rut
I should have kept my big mouth shut
Out in the backwoods, hiding in a hut
I should have kept my big mouth shut

Come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Climb out of your secret space
I know you’re there
Deep in the hide of me
Ooh, come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Put those memories in their place
Help me get back
To the brighter side of me
You’re the well that I crawl to
When my soul is cracked and dry
You’re the courage I call to
When I’m too afraid to cry
Come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Climb out of your secret space
I know you’re there
Deep in the hide of me
Ooh, come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Put those memories in their place
Help me get back
To the brighter side of me
You’re the hope that I’m saving
When I misplace the will to live
You’re the love that I’m craving
When I’ve forgotten how to forgive
Ah, please help me remember how to forgive
Come on, come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Climb out of your secret space
I know you’re there
Deep in the hide of me
Ooh, come on, heart
Heart have mercy
Put those memories in their place
Help me get back
To the brighter side of me
I know you’re there
Deep in the hide of me
Help me get back
To the brighter side of me
Ooh, come on, heart...

Midnight is falling
Stretching out ahead
We should be at home
Rolling in our big brass bed
But we’re out on this highway
Doing the swerve and dip
We’re tuned in
For the wake-up call
When the tires hit the rumble strip
Swing it back on the road
Got no time to
Hit the ditch
Gonna ride with our ears wide open
For the clatter of the rumble strip
Oh, the rumble strip
Temperature dropping
Out in the rising storm
We’re headed for shelter
We’ll be living safe and warm
Steady hands on the big wheel
Ah, they will not lose their grip
Tuning in
For the wake-up call
When the tires hit the rumble strip
Swing it back on the road
Got no time to
Hit the ditch
Gonna ride with our ears wide open
For the clatter of the rumble strip
Oh, the rumble strip
Sometimes a guy lands right on top
Or maybe he takes a hard fall
Either way, why should a guy up and stop
Why fumble or crumble
Or let your mind get all in a jumble
Keep it right on the ball
Right on the ball
Tuning in
For the wake-up call
When the tires hit the rumble strip
Swing it back on the road
Got no time to
Hit the ditch
Gonna ride with our ears wide open
Gonna ride with our ears wide open
For the clatter of the rumble strip
Oh, the rumble strip...
